“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” That is from the Declaration of Independence. I believe it is about time, if not pass time, we extend equality to all: men and women, straight and members of the LGBTQ, white and non-white. We should once and for all declare that all are created equal and are deserving of being treated as human being, first and foremost. This is why I will be working with Congress to once again work on an Equal Rights Amendment. This will require 2/3 of both the house and senate to vote in the affirmative and 3/4 of the states to ratify. It is not an easy process, but one which I feel is necessary in order to start moving this country in the right direction.
Equal Rights is Just A Start
This battle does not begin and end with an Equal Rights Amendment. We will have much work to do to start on repairing race and gender relations in this country, but it is a good and healthy start. Will it bring everyone together to start treating each other as people, before anything else, no. I sincerely hope it will begin the process towards that, but it will not be a magical cure.
